Aside from Ma Chao and sometimes Wei Yan, he doesn’t really have any close attachments in Shu.
It’s a little hard to figure out exactly what Ma Dai’s place is, though. Maybe I just missed it – I do tend to blow through Shu stages as fast as I can, so if I’m going to overlook something subtle about a character, it’ll be in Shu. He gets a little pouty sometimes, and I would assume that working with Ma Chao’s crazy ass would wear on anyone, but I’ve never seen anything “dark” from him. If he does, he hides it damn well because I’ve never seen a hint of it. I’ve heard that he’s got some sort of “dark side” that he hides behind his cheerful persona. He shows similar devotion later, when fighting for Shu and, in particular, in his friendship with Wei Yan. He’s completely devoted to Ma Chao, following him on all of his crazy adventures even though you really get the impression that Ma Dai would really rather be anywhere else. In fact, Ma Dai is a very giving and generous guy. I can never fault a character for just being a generally good guy. In the same game, after the battle at Wuzhang, he’s the one who makes an effort to save Wei Yan from the Wei army. He grows to respect Wei Yan, even though he acknowledges that Zhuge Liang won’t. He’s got a pretty nice scene in DW7:XL where he has a little talk with Wei Yan and the two of them get to know each other. He’s a generally nice guy who seems to treat the people around him pretty well. He’s got a good attitude about him, and a good head on his shoulders. But as a casual, lazy guy myself, I find Ma Dai much easier to connect with. I get that the other Shu characters are really passionate about whatever it is they’re doing, and bully for them. Ma Dai is a much more relaxed, casual, even lazy guy, and that’s refreshing. I’m pretty sure Ma Chao is always screaming, and the other Shu officers are pretty high-strung as well. He’s a breath of fresh air compared to the people around him. TL DR: He’s a refreshing character, and everybody loves his hat.
